Round 10. Under the Sink Edit.

Today’s edit brings me joy. Toward the end of 2016 I started a honey do list of items around the house to tackle in 2017. My intention is to contribute to the household (and win me some brownie points with Kathleen). It is turning out to be super satisfying for me! I love knowing that there are tasks complete. Couple this with my reduction project and it is heavenly. Discarding is creating more space, to breathe, to live, to laugh, to be. This is good.

On the list, replace garbage disposal and check hot water heater. I asked my dad if he would help  me install a new disposal. I let him know I can order a new one from Amazon, just tell me when he is available. Yesterday, he called to tell me he will change it today and would pick up a new one for me.  He was waiting at our house when I came home from an appointment, we spent two hours changing the garbage disposal, climbing into the attic to adjust the water heater temp, and sitting on the couch talking about life, work, retirement and minimizing stress.

Part of changing the disposal is clearing out the space beneath the sink. After today, I know that I really  could use a few baskets for storing bottles, cleaners, etc., I have gold and pink spray paint, lots of sandpaper and a handful of Allen wrenches. I also discovered things to discard. Like an old glass olive oil dispenser that once housed oil [then dish soap, then oil again], random drain stoppers, mismatched items and more. I discarded a few items and a random plate that was living beneath the sink while assisting my dad. We also cleared out the old disposal unit and all the packaging and additional pieces.

Here’s a picture of our shiny new InSinkerator!

*Disclaimer: Kathleen said the bottle was hers, I think it was mine. Either way, it is was ours.

Round 5. Closet Edit.

Today’s edit happened through conversation! My co-worker’s son loves yoga. There is yoga on Sesame Street, who knew?! And, she said he loves to get on her mat and practice. I shared with her that I would love to gift him a mat and how it fit perfectly with my theme for the year. {insert joy here}

For the next several  minutes, I shared my theme, the intention and the blog. My 1 thing | 30 days | 12 months project! Then, two wonderful things happened. 1. She was interested in starting her own project. 2. She accepted the mats! Win Win!

I have 4 mats left, contact me if you have a kid that loves yoga!

Round 2. Nightstand Edit

1 thing |30 days |12 months

Today’s clearing is practical and sentimental. Clearing my nightstand drawer: Part 1.  I found my camera charger! It’s been right there all along. I am calling this Part 1, because there are 2 drawers and I only cleared through the bottom drawer tonight.

  1. Thank You notes for Christmas gifts. I sifted through my drawer to find a handful of notes. The consumerism in me thought, “I’ve sent these before.. possibly to the same people…I could pick up a pack at the Dollar Tree or make some….” But no. I am unapologetically sending this mixed batch of notes from sets that I’ve most likely sent to these same recipients. In doing so, I am clearing space and sharing kindness. Win. Win.
  2. Sebastian’s Boutonnière. I’ve kept this one for years in this little paper box. He wore it to his first “date” dance in high school, winter formal. I do not need to hold on to everything tangible of the kids to have the experiences.

*Full Disclosure – This was a tough one because I want to go purchase new cards to send and not send the same cards. BUT, change can be uncomfortable and not be bad. Learning to use what I have and not purchase to simply purchase is the lesson. People love and appreciate snail mail SO MUCH that I can send the same card for 18 years and it will be well received.
